Cancun
The kind of place you come to when you want to wake up and walk right down to the beach; where if you fancy a coconut salt scrub at half past two and a tequila at half past three no-one’s going to bat an eyelid. Although famed for spring break vibes – delirious mayhem at Coco Bongo and killer cocktails in a bar swaying from rope-hung swings – the Yucatan Peninsula has transformed itself, and Cancun holidays are all about dazzling oceanfront hotels with hideaway spots, seductive Mexican flavours and glamorous pools and where everyone falls in love with barefoot bliss, oceanfront sea life and the shade of palm trees leaning over plumped-up day beds. |
Playa Del Carmen
On Mexico’s sun-soaked Caribbean coast, Playa del Carmen was most popular for its spotless beaches and coral reefs. This mellow fishing town has developed quickly in the space of a few years with an extra cluster of hotels in Playacar to the south of town. But it’s still a world apart from swaggering Cancun, its nearest neighbour up the coast. Playa’s shoreline is an uninterrupted ribbon of milky white sand, lapped by the turquoise Caribbean Sea. Central Playa del Carmen, just south of the main pier, is the family beach. It lines up gently shelving water, water sports, and boat trips to the coral-haloed island of Cozumel. Past the pier it becomes North Playa del Carmen, a glamorous section of sand that’s home to beach clubs where DJs spin tunes to the guests stretched out on sun loungers. |
Riviera Maya
You can head for the Riviera Maya, on Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula, and do nothing but sip cocktails on tropical white-sand beaches. But there's so much more on offer. Mayan ruins, eco parks, world-class diving – they’re all on the cards along this 30-kilometre stretch of coastline. Beaches aren’t Riviera’s only natural attractions – you’ve also got plenty of wildlife, jungle and underwater caves. All of this is best showcased in the area’s huge eco parks. There are four to choose from and each one lays on something different, so you can set off on a boat trip on the lookout for dolphins, raft down rivers or just take in the jaguars, flamingos and monkeys that call the parks home. |
